Famed writer/director and North Carolina native Jody Hill is working with many well-known names from Hollywood on a new movie, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter,” parts of which are being filmed right here in the High Country.

This will be the first feature film shot in the area since Castle Rock and Nelson Entertainment’s Winter People (1989), which featured stars like Kurt Russell, Kelly McGillis and Lloyd Bridges.

The film, also being referred to by some sources as “Untitled Jody Hill Project,” comes from Rough House Pictures, a production company led by Hill and famous funnyman Danny McBride (Your Highness, 2011; Pineapple Express, 2008).

Online reports indicate that they’re bringing on board co-writer John Carcieri, who has worked with them on other projects like Observe and Report (2009) and HBO’s Eastbound & Down (2009-2013).

We don’t know much about this movie yet; but, if it’s anything like some of the trio’s other projects, it’s likely to bring a lot of laughs.

According to its IMDB profile, the comedy will tell the story of “Jaden, a cool and confident sixth-grade boy” who “is supposed to be bonding with his father on a hunting trip” but “wants to do anything but.”

IMDB also reports that the movie will feature big-time actors like Josh Brolin —known for his roles in Sicario (2015), W. (2008), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) and No Country for Old Men (2007) — and Timothy Carr.

Also on board are producers Scott Rudin, Lila Yacoub and David Gordon Green.

IMDB shows that filming is underway in parts of North Carolina and Georgia.

The Avery Post reports that some filming has already been done in local spots like Wiseman’s View and Long Ridge Church, with other parkway scenes on the agenda.

In recent months, casting companies including Tona B. Dahlquist and Fincannon and Associates have held open calls for talent in Asheville, as well as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and other cities in the southeast.

“The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” is set to release in December 2017.
