July 1, 2014. The Jones House will be jamming on July 4 following the parade. In addition to the festive music of the community band and the traditional cake and watermelon served on the Jones House lawn after the parade, two bands will be performing as part of the regular Friday Concerts at the Jones House series.
The concerts will start at 1 p.m. with Fat Face Band, an avant-garde jazz trio hailing from the Charlotte area, who have performed at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market several times. The Far Face Band formed in 2011. Most recently, Fat Face toured the United Kingdom in June 2014 performing 13 concerts.
The trio has performed throughout the Southern U.S. including for President Barack Obama’s 2012 Democratic National Convention. Featuring a unique instrumentation, Fat Face blends styles and sounds from New Orleans, traditional Americana, alongside jazz standards, original compositions and avant-garde. The band includes Matthew Postle on trumpet and melodia, Molly Brown on tuba and Troy Conn on guitar.
“These guys have a really interesting sound, blending a lot of different American influences,” says concert organizer, Mark Freed. “A blend of American sounds will be fitting as we celebrate our nation’s birth.”
Liz Hayes and Common Threads will follow Fat Face Band, around 2:00 p.m., featuring the vocal stylings of Liz Hayes, who has been a regular performer at the Jones House Friday night series for years as Liz Harmon. The Common Threads band will include Hayes’s longtime collaborators and friends, including Glenn Hubbard on keys, Billy Ralph Winkler on guitar, and other friends.
“Liz grew up in a big musical family, and she and the guys in her band have been part of the fabric of the local musical scene all their lives,” Freed says. “It’s a treat to have them back to the Jones House porch.”
As always, the concerts are free and will take place rain or shine. We encourage patrons to bring their own chair or blanket.
The 2014 Concerts at the Jones House series is sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Farmer’s Rental and Power, Footsloggers, Mast General Store, Melanie’s, MPrints, and Stickboy Bread Co.
