The Jones House Cultural and Community Center Once Again Offers Group Music Lessons to the Community

Jan. 13, 2014. A new round of music lessons kicks off at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center in downtown Boone on Thursday, Feb. 6, in a session that will continue through May.

Classes are held each Thursday at the Jones House, starting in the afternoon at 4:30, 5:30 or 6:30 p.m., depending on the particular class. Students ages six through adult may enroll in these group classes, led by expert local old-time bluegrass musicians.

imgres“The group lessons are a lot of fun,” says Cultural Resources Coordinator of the Town of Boone, Mark Freed. “It gives students a chance to go through the experience with other players at their level, and some classes will combine different instruments, which is more like playing in a band.”

Instruments offered include fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo and occasionally dulcimer and ukulele.

“The instruments and playing levels offered depends on what students enroll,” Freed said. “We need to have enough students to assign the precious space at the Jones House. The House really fills up on Thursdays.”

Lessons begin at rank beginner levels and continue through intermediate and sometimes advanced levels.

“This program is a great opportunity for beginner through intermediate musicians to learn a little more, or for rank beginners to try a new instrument,” Freed said. “Students can being their own instruments, or rent them from the program.”

The Music Lessons at the Jones House are offered by the Town of Boone in collaboration with the Downtown Boone Development Association and grant support from the North Carolina Arts Council.
