Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music has just the cure for a hot or rainy afternoon in the High Country! You are invited to attend “The Americana Show” special matinee concert, featuring Clay Lunsford and Mathew Weaver, on Tuesday – August 28th at 2:00PM. This show will take place at the climate controlled Harvest House Performing Arts Venue in Boone. This is a special re-scheduled concert from last summer that had to be canceled due to the death of Clay Lunsford’s sister.
JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton, states, “This is the third “Pay as You Exit” matinee in our 2018 25th Anniversary Indoor Concert Series. These shows were extremely popular in the past two years, and we are building on that success by presenting these “Free”, non ticketed, matinees in hopes of building our audiences by offering a chance for folks who maybe do not get out at night for our regular concerts to become a part of our JSMHM family.”
“This was an idea Joe Shannon came up with before he passed away in 2014 and JSMHM board member Sarah Borders has worked tirelessly the past three years to make these matinees a reality in memory of Joe,” Sutton added.
Clay Lunsford is a multi-talented instrumentalist and vocalist from Union Grove, North Carolina, and throughout his musical career, he has played over 10,000 shows. For 50 years, Lunsford has performed throughout the southeast, entertaining thousands of people with his unique style of thumb picking, playing bluegrass, gospel, and old-time Appalachian mountain music. He is the lead member of his family quartet band, “The Gospel Voices,” also known as the GV Band who performs at both churches and festivals. The GV Band presents “The Return of the Legends” show – which features a lot of classic country, oldies rock and roll, and their big Elvis show.
Lunsford is the nephew of the late Bascom Lamar Lunsford who wrote the popular song, “Mountain Dew” that has been recorded over 900 times by musical artists. He recently recorded a new CD, “Thumb to Thumb,” with world-renowned guitarist and luthier, Wayne Henderson. Clay is the president of the North Carolina Thumb Pickers Association, and hosts the annual Thumb Pickers Convention in March.
Matthew Weaver is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter and six-time winner of Pianist-Instrumentalist of the Year for the North Carolina Folk Festival (2011-2017). Matthew plays 19 different instruments and has appeared on stages from The Grand Ole Opry, Dollywood, bluegrass and mountain music festivals and numerous churches. He is the 2013 recipient of the North Carolina Bascom Lamar Lunsford Music Award, and is the pianist for the GV Band and The Return of the Legends Show. Matthew is a 2013 graduate of Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina.
Sutton added, “We are excited to present Clay and Matthew for this matinee. They will be an excellent fit for the variety of music that JSMHM is known for. Please remember that though we say this is a ‘Free’ event, the important thing for us is the ‘Pay as You Exit’ part of these shows. If you enjoy the performance we suggest you support our matinees with a $10 donation so that JSMHM may continue to offer them next year.”
Please note – the JSMHM matinees run straight through for an hour and 15 minutes without an intermission. The doors open at 1:15pm.
