The Hunger and Health Coalition Hosts First Annual 5K Homecoming Run for Hunger at Mayors Park

By  Rebecca Mullins

Oct. 9, 2013. On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Hunger and Health Coalition will host the first annual 5K Homecoming Run for Hunger at Mayors Park on the Greenway Trail. Registration is only $20 for individuals and $45 for groups of three. All proceeds go to the Hunger and Health Coalition food assistance program and back out into the community for hungry families.

You can register on the organization’s website here, or at the race on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8:00 a.m. The race will then begin at 9 a.m.

RFHlogoThe Run for Hunger has categories for every age range from children to adults, so whether you’re in shape for a run or up for a leisurely walk, this race is for you.

All money raised goes back out to the community. For every $1 raised, the coalition is able to give $7 worth of food from their food pantry to families in need.

“We’re able to purchase food from the food bank for a very reduced price per pound, about 19 cents per pound,” said Compton Fortuna, the Executive Director of the Hunger and Health Coalition.

That food is available twice a month for famlies that fall under a certain income cap.

“In an average month, we serve around 800 families,” Fortuna said.

“In September we had 85 new people come in, which is more than twice as many as we had in July, and one out of every 3 people is a child under age 18.”

The number of people in need of food in our area is growing and this race is a prime opportunity to help these hungry families and children in our own county by raising money for the Hunger and Health Coalition. You could register for the run, buy a t-shirt on the day of the race or just donate. Every dollar counts.
