April 22, 2014. This weekend, towns all around the High Country will be gearing up for a massive, state-wide clean sweep. The statewide “Litter Sweep” which will begin April 26 and run until May 10, is a large-scale effort to clean up the cities and towns of North Carolina for the betterment of the public.
The Town of Boone wishes to invite volunteers to help enhance Boone’s natural beauty with the biannual “Boone Clean-Up Day” on Saturday, April 26. The event invites citizens to spend the day clearing away litter that has accumulated along the streets and streams during the winter season. Volunteers can participate by cleaning their premises and putting the refuse curbside. Simply call the Public Works Department at 828-268-6230 for free removal during the event.
“The amount of volunteers we have come out really depends on the weather,” said Shannon Isaacs who coordinates the event.
“Typically we have 250 participants.”
The Town of Boone will also be awarding prizes to the winners of “The Most Unusual Litter” contest, which can be entered by any citizen by bringing unusual litter to the Public Works Center during Boone Clean-Up Day. Citizens are also invited to the Public Works Center from 12-1:30 p.m. for free refreshments and community fellowship. Cleaning supplies can be picked up at the Boone Public Works Center located at 321 E. King Street between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Boone Clean-Up Day or any day before the event.
Volunteers may clean up their own areas or call Isaacs to be placed in an area to help clean up.
For more information or to register for the event, contact Shannon Isaacs at 828-268-6230.
Blowing Rock is also getting in on the cleaning action on Saturday, April 26. The Blowing Rock Appearance Advisory Commission is coordinating the annual Spring Clean-Up Day for any citizen who would like to help make Blowing Rock even more beautiful. Anyone who is interested in sprucing up the community is encouraged to meet at the American Legion Building in downtown Blowing Rock at 9:30 a.m. Vests, gloves, trash bags and maps will be handed out to volunteers and clean up efforts will take place along town property and streets. Lunch will be served for volunteers following the clean up.
