By Madison V. Fisler

April 22, 2013. It’s Earth Day! Here in the High Country, like many other places around the country, residents, students and visitors alike are all getting into the green spirit. The High Country boasts many activities to help everyone in the area celebrate.

images-1At Appalachian State University, the college is challenging everyone to “Put Your Green Foot Forward” during their celebration of Earth Week. Today’s challenge from the university is to “Feed Your Wild Side” which will feature a Humane Society Dog Walk on Sanford Mall, and Student Government Association sponsored seed ball giveaway. The challenges for the rest of the week are as follows:

  • Tuesday – Unplug Yourself, featuring a 7 p.m. screening of the film Gasland

  • Wednesday – Zero Waste Challenge, featuring zero-waste education in Central Dining Hall, Mess on the Mall, waste audit tours and a 8 p.m. film screening of Story of Stuff and more

  • Thursday – Community Day, where you are challenged to meet your neighbors. This day will feature the Beehive Collective and much more

  • Friday – Creativity and The Arts Day, where your challenge is to get funky with the Earth Tones Music Festival from 2-7 p.m.

In addition, Boone will participate in a state-wide spring-litter sweep between April 13 and 27. Any individual or group is encouraged to participate by volunteering to remove the litter and waste that has accumulated along streets and streams during the winter. In the spirit of environmentalism, the end of April and beginning of May will be a good time to do a little spring cleaning around the house and property with Household Hazardous Waste Day, Community Pride Week and Operation Medicine Cabinet taking place.
