The Grand Opening of Julian Price Memorial Park Picnic Area TRACK Trail Scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 20

Aug. 14, 2013. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks Program, in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Blowing Rock Historical Society and the Blowing Rock Rotary Club, is pleased to invite the public to the Grand Opening Celebration of the Julian Price Memorial Park Picnic Area TRACK Trail at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the trail head across the bridge.

Designed to get kids and families “unplugged,” outdoors and connected to nature for their health and the health of our parks, the Kids in Parks program has created a network of TRACK Trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway and in more than 5 states.

At a distance of about 1 mile, TRACK Trails are designed as introductory trails to get kids and families unplugged and outside in our parks and public lands. Each trail has several self-guided brochures to introduce families to the trail and some of its unique features, making each adventure educational and fun.

At the end of their adventure, hikers (or Trail TRACKERS) can register their hikes at kidsinparks.com to win fun incentives for every TRACK Trail they complete. The Kids in Parks program has over 60 TRACK Trails and Nature Trail Disc Golf Courses throughout the country.

An initiative of the Blue Ridge Foundation, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, the mission of Kids in Parks is to work with partners throughout the country to promote children’s health and the health of our parks by increasing physical activity and engaging families in outdoor adventures that foster a meaningful connection to the natural and cultural world.

“This project was possible because we have community groups, like the Blowing Rock Historical Society and the Blowing Rock Rotary Club, who care about the health of our children and of our parks and want to make a difference,” said Carolyn Ward, CEO of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.

TRACK Trails are appropriate for children of all ages, and area residents and visitors are encouraged to bring children and families to this free event, which features a guided walk, light refreshments and prizes.
