“The Family that Plays Together Stays Together,” JSMHM Presents the John Cockman Family

Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music is pleased to announce as a part of its 25th Anniversary 2018 Season, the John Cockman Family will appear in special matinee concert on Thursday, June 21st at 2:00pm. The show is titled “The Family that Plays Together, Stays Together”. This performance will take place at the Harvest House Performing Arts Venue in Boone and it marks the opening of the JSMHM Matinee Series, which will feature four other afternoon concerts during this Silver Anniversary Season.

The John Cockman Family is a close-knit family with deep roots in the Western North Carolina music scene. As part of the nationally acclaimed Cockman Family bluegrass gospel group, they have performed at music festivals and churches throughout the southeast. The band features the vocals and instrumentation of sisters Arwen and Lorien Cockman. Multitalented Arwen is 18 years old and is an award-winning fiddler, guitarist and banjo player who plays Celtic, bluegrass, and western styles with equal virtuosity. Her younger sister, Lorien, is 16 years old. She is the lead singer for the group, plays keyboard, and is also an expert step-dancer. The girls harmonize beautifully, and perform many popular songs in the Appalachian tradition. They also love western music, and were named the Harmony Yodeling Duo of the Year by the Western Music Association in Albuquerque, NM.

The leader of the family is John Cockman, founder of BluegrassDaddy.com and a professor of Physics at Appalachian State University. John plays several instruments with the group and sings with his daughters in beautiful family harmony. Jennifer, the mother of the group, plays bass. They will be joined in performance by their adorable younger sister, Morgen, who is six years old and plays fiddle and ukulele. The John Cockman Family is warm and engaging, and continues to endear audiences with their mesmerizing vocals, their amazing musicianship, and their fun, family-friendly presentation of Appalachian music.

JSMHM director, Rodney Sutton, explains, “We are so excited to welcome back the John Cockman Family to kick off our JSMHM 2018 Matinees. These afternoon concerts have proven very popular the past two seasons, especially with our audience members who may not get out much at night. These shows were initially designed to hopefully attract church groups and bus tours who make excursions up to Boone from off the mountain and on that note they have been very successful.” “These concerts are non-ticketed ‘Pay As You Exit’ shows – we trust that those who attend will be fully entertained and that everyone will gladly contribute a suggested donation of $10 to cover our production cost”, Sutton added.

Private sponsors for this concert are Tony and Lynn Barbour. Additional supported is provided by Mountain Times Publishing, High Country Press, The Watauga Arts Council, and Grassroots funding from The NC Arts Council. Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music is also proud to be included as a site on the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina (BlueRidgeMusicNC.com).

The Harvest House Performing Arts Venue is located at 247 Boone Heights Dr. in Boone.
