With music, lyrics and a book by Richard O’Brien, “The Rocky Horror Show” is a humorous tribute to science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through early 1970s. It tells the story of a newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a muscle man named Rocky Horror. Originally produced in 1973, the musical has since developed a cult following and was also adapted into the 1975 film, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which today has worldwide fans and is the longest-running release in film history.

In 2000, the “sweet transvestite” Frank N. Furter and his motley crew did the “time warp” on Broadway in a 25th anniversary revival in a deliberately kitschy, rock n’ roll, sci-fi gothic style that has made the show more popular than ever before. Although the movie has been shown in the Boone area for decades, this stage production is the regional premiere of the work.

“The Rocky Horror Show” involves more than three dozen students in the cast, crew and live orchestra, representing more than a dozen different academic majors from across the entire university. The production is co-directed by senior theatre major Corey Roe and Keith Martin, the John M. Blackburn Distinguished Professor of Theatre. Senior Kellie Letner is the choreographer with musical direction by Aaron Ames. An all-student orchestra will accompany the actors.

Rosen Concert Hall is located in the Broyhill Music Center at the Hayes School of Music, 813 Rivers Street in Boone. Free parking for the performances is available on campus in faculty lots, the College Street parking deck near Belk Library and Information Commons, Kidd Brewer Stadium Lot and Raley Hall parking lot.
