The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum Features Exhibitions, Films, Workshops and More This Summer

June 5, 2014. This summer, the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM) will offer a multitude of exciting events for residents and High Country visitors alike. The museum will host exhibits, classes, showcases, films, workshops, children’s activities and more through the summertime, and there is truly something for everyone.

Current and Upcoming Exhibits

Currently, the BRAHM is exhibiting more than 20 paintings of barns by noted American artist Wolf Kahn. Alongside the paintings will be quilts representing Appalachia throughout the galleries. The exhibition will remain in place throughout the summer and will close on Aug. 31.

Coming up, the BRAHM will host an exhibition showcasing Hound Ears Club, “Hound Ears Club: Celebrating 50 Years of Contributions to the High Country.” The exhibit will feature artifacts that tell the story and history of the club through the years, along with the story of the club’s founders. The exhibition will open on June 20 and will run through Sept. 7.

The BRAHM permanent collection includes works by Elliot Daingerfield donated by Cora and Lamont Hudson, and Patty and WElborn Alexander. The BRAHM collection also includes glass art from Penland School of Arts donated by Sonia and Issac Luski and pottery donated by Judy and Bill Petrie.

The Appalachian Documentary Film Series

The Appalachian Documentary Film Series hosted by the museum will include the following films this summer:

  • Anne Braden: Southern Patriot: On June 10 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., join the BRAHM for a showing of this first-person documentary about the life of Civil Rights leaders that delves into racism, repression and the power of a woman’s commitment to social justice. The film will be followed by a discussion and a reception. Cost for this event is $8.
  • The Mystery of George Masa: George Masa came to the mountains of Appalachia from Japan in 1915 and his photography skills and leadership contributed to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Trail. The film will be followed by a discussion and a reception on July 29 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Hazel Dickens: It’s Hard to Tell the Singer from the Song: On Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m., the BRAHM will screen this film about a pioneering woman in bluegrass and country music that influenced generations of songwriters and musicians. This film will be followed by a discussion and a reception.

Other Events

On June 26 from 7-10 p.m., the BRAHM will host a Barn Dance in the museum galleries. Enjoy a farm-to-table supper, dancing and drinks. Attire for this event is “diamonds and denim.” To attend, RSVPs must be received by June 15 at 828-295-9099.

On July 31-Aug. 3, the BRAHM will host the annual Art and Antiques Show where vendors from across the east coast will showcase items such as art, jewelry, antique furniture, silver items and more. The show includes a presentation by Schatzie Crowther and much more! Tickets to the show are $10 each and may be purchased at the door or by calling 828-295-9099.

Cork and Canvas events will be held June 12, July 24, Aug. 28 and Sept. 25 from 5-7 p.m. In this program, participants are provided with painting supplies, wine and light snacks while a local teacher leads guests step by step through creating a unique piece of art.
