Close to 100 people showed up at the Elk River Airport on Thursday night to celebrate the launch of The Aviatrix, a new book from local resident Kim Jochl.

The Aviatrix is a self-published, nonfiction narrative based on Jochl’s adventure to tackle her fear of flying and obtain her pilot’s license. This wife and mother, also vice president of Sugar Mountain Resort, tells us through the story why it’s important to face our fears head on, and reminds us that there’s nothing we can’t accomplish with a little motivation and a whole lot of courage.

“I was really surprised,” Jochl said. “I definitely didn’t expect that kind of turnout.”

Jochl’s family members were on-hand to talk about their characters in the story.

“It was wicked fun,” she said. “It was nice to have their support and to tell stories about them.”

Content Editor Betsy Thorpe and Copy Editor Maya Packard traveled from Charlotte to help promote The Aviatrix.

Jochl signed and sold copies of the book for the first time at Thursday’s launch party and looks forward to sharing her story with readers everywhere.

“I’m really excited to share the story,” she said. “The real life story.”

The Aviatrix is now available for purchase through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and local retailers including Fred’s General Mercantile, the Appalachian State University bookstore and the Elizabethton Muncinipal Airport, and will soon be available at the Grandfather Mountain Gift Shop.
