July 8, 2014. After an astounding success last year, the Spirit of Avery event returns to the High Country on Aug. 7. The second annual Spirit of Avery event will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. at Camp Yonohnoka.

Sponsored by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, the Spirit of Avery will allow participants a chance to taste local distilled products, offering samples in favorite spirits like rum, brandy, gin, bourbon and more.

Tickets for the event are now available and include the tastings and light appetizers from Eseeola Lodge and local eateries. The event will also feature live music from The Johnson Brothers. Tickets for the event are just $25 each and can be purchased by calling the Avery County Chamber of Commerce at 828-898-5605.

Aside from the tastings and refreshments, guests will be treated to the educational side of the distilleries and will learn about the history of the local distilleries from the experts. Liquor production has a rich and interesting history, especially in the south, so come out and have a taste.

Aside from distilleries, there will also be wineries and breweries represented, all from North Carolina.

“We will probably have the same amount of distilleries as last year, to say conservatively,” said Sarah Brewer of Avery Municipal ABC Store, who is coordinating the event.

There are 13 recognized distilleries in North Carolina. Many of those have committed to the Spirit of Avery event. According to brewer, the following distilleries have committed:

  • Carolina Distillery in Lenoir
  • Blue Ridge Distillery in Bastic
  • Muddy River Distillery in Belmont
  • Johnson Brothers Carolina Distributing in Durham

Also available at the event will be various local food vendors. All vendors are local to North Carolina.
