The ASU Department of Art’s Faculty Biennial Exhibition Begins Jan. 23 at Appalachian State University

Jan. 22, 2014. The Department of Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition for 2014 will be on display Jan. 23-Feb. 27 at the Smith Gallery in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts and from Feb. 7 – March 22 at Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. Both galleries are located on the Appalachian State University Campus. 

appalachian-state-universitys-womens-basketball-team-announces-the-complete-2013-2014-game-schedulePresentation of the exhibition at two venues allows visitors to experience a range of artworks in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, metal, fiber, photography, printmaking, drawing, clay, video, digital media and installations. The works in the exhibition highlight the efforts of the Department of Art faculty members who are committed to not only being motivators and mentors for students, but to engaging in scholarship and research. 

Faculty exhibitions enable students to experience and discuss artwork produced by their teachers. They also give the community a change to engage with the many ideas and practices being explored and taught within the department. 

The Smith Gallery will exhibit work by the following artists: Adam Adcock, Catherine Altice, Eli Bentor, Martin Church, Tyler Deal, Travis Donovan, Nelle Owens Dunlap, Lynn Duryea, Tim Ford, Carmen Grier, Scott Ludwig, Ed Midgett, Mark Nystrom, Branch Richter, Jody Servon, John Stephenson, Lisa Stinson, James Toub and Tricia Treacy. 

Artists exhibiting at the Turchin Center are Jeri Allison, Catherine Altice, Joseph Bigley, Angela Bubash, Karen Cleveland, Rosa Dargan-Powers, Nelle Owens Dunlap, April Flanders with Caroline Daniels, Michael Grady, Victoria Grube, Brooke Hofsess, Jeana Klein, Gary Nemcosky, Branch Richter, Joshua White and Barbara Yale-Read. 

Receptions for the dual-venue exhibition will be held Friday, Feb. 7, from 5-6:30 p.m. at  the Smith Gallery and from 6-10 p.m. at the Turchin Center. The public is invited to view the exhibits and attend the receptions.

The Smith Gallery, formerly Catherine J. Smith Gallery, is Appalachian’s Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts located at 733 Rivers Street. Gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 828-262-7338 or visit www.art.appstate.edu/cjs.
