Aug. 19, 2014. After being postponed due to rain earlier this month, the annual Shag at Sugar Mountain will finally take place on Saturday, Aug. 23. The event will be held from 4:30-9 p.m. at Sugar Mountain Golf Clubhouse located at 1054 Sugar Mtn Dr. in Sugar Mountain.
“The first one was in 2010 to celebrate our 25th anniversary as a township,” said Tammy Floyd, Clerk at the Village of Sugar Mountain.
“But people loved it so much and asked for it again and again so we obliged and made it an annual event.”
The exciting event will include many exciting events including dancing, dance lessons, a kid’s play area, door prizes, food vendors and of course music. The live music for the night will be provided by The Fantastic Shakers. In addition, a raffle, face painting and balloon animals will be available with proceeds benefitting the Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Department. Fireworks at the end of the night will be provided courtesy of JECO, Pyrotecnics, Inc.
“Raffle tickets are $1 per ticket and we do a behind-the-scenes drawing and announce the winners,” Floyd said. “We have lots of donations from local businesses and so there will be some great packages. Any proceeds from the raffles go toward the fire department, and we average about $500 every year.”
For the kids, there will be inflatables, face painting, balloon animals and even a bubble machine. For the adults, there will be dance lessons, live music, a cash bar and of course, shag dancing! There is no admission cost for the event, guests only have to pay for their own food and drinks.
Food vendors for Shag at Sugar Mountain will include Fire in the Hole wood-fired pizza, Caddy Shack Cafe hamburgers and hot dogs and Carolina Barbeque. There will be a cash bar available to purchase beer and wine and non-alcoholic drinks will also be available for guests to purchase.
