The 21st Annual Avery County Agricultural and Horticultural Fair Held Sept. 9-13 at Heritage Park

Sept. 9, 2014. As the end of the summer rolls by, fair season is rolling in. Kicking off what is sure to be yet another fantastic season of High Country fairs, the 21st annual Avery County Agricultural and Horticultural Fair will be held Sept. 9-13 in Newland.

d4b5b89092510bf1af96a221ffa52a97This popular fair is a family-oriented event that strives to preserve mountain heritage. Included in the event lineup will be pig roundups, chainsaw competitions, cupcake wars, corn hole tournaments, corn shucking, heritage displays and emonstrations, a beauty pageant, a talent show and much more. On Saturday, attendees will get to see Carolina Mower Racing on the racetrack and a garden tractor pull. Food will be abundant and there will be plenty of rides all along the midway, according to a release.

The fair is home to many Farm and Home competitions, including jam and jelly competitions, flowers and baked goods. If you want to enter your own goods into these competitions, be sure to have them in on time for judging.

All entries must be brought to Heritage Park to be considered. All entries except for cut flowers and culinary perishables must be in by Saturday, Sept. 6 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. or Sunday, Sept. 7 from 12-7 p.m. Everything including cut flowers and culinary perishables must be entered by Monday, Sept. 8 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Baked goods only will be accepted on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 8-9 a.m.

The fair is open from 5-10:30 p.m. each evening with rides beginning at 6 p.m. The Saturday fair opens at 10 a.m. with rides running from 12-5 p.m. and starting again at 6 p.m.

“The young kids love the rides, and for the kids there’s the talent show and beauty pageant. There’s really something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a huge family fun event,” said Aneda Johnson, Fair Director in a previous interview. 

Ride bracelets will cost $15 for Tuesday and Wednesday, $17 Thursday and $20 Friday and Saturday.

According to the released schedule, the schedule of events for the week is as follows:

Sept. 9

  • 5 p.m. – Opening Ceremonies with Jerry Moody
  • 6 p.m. – Beauty Pageant in the Entertainment Tent

Sept. 10

  • 9 a.m.-12 p.m. – Educational School Day
  • 6 p.m. – 4-H Talent Show in the Entertainment Tent

Sept . 11

  • Educational School Day
  • 6 p.m. – Cupcake War Judging
  • 6 p.m. – Power Wheels Race at the Racetrack
  • Corn shucking competition and square dancing in the Entertainment Tent
  • 7 p.m. – Cupcake Auction

Sept. 12

  • Pig roundup
  • Fertilizer contest

Sept. 13

  • 11 a.m. – Garden Tractor Pull
  • 4 p.m. – Lawnmower race
  • Final corn hole tournament
