June 23, 2014.  On Friday, June 20, 34 teams comprised of more than 400 Watauga County survivors, caregivers and supporters showed their dedication to the eradication of cancer everywhere with the Watauga County Relay for Life.

The Relay event raised more than $98,000 this year for the American Cancer Society, according to Carrie Phillips, the new Relay for Life specialist in the area.

imgres“We had 34 teams and 481 participants that were registered,” Phillips said. “And we had more that came in that didn’t register”

At the Relay, supporters and survivors participated in many events throughout the evening and the Relay lasted all night long.

Many of the teams do different types of fundraisers throughout the year, from 5K runs to pancake suppers and everything in between. All of the money that these teams raise throughout the year is donated to the American Cancer Society to help fight cancer, raise awareness and spread information to those diagnosed and those who support them.

Last year, 36 teams representing 288 team members raised more than $115,000 for the cause, according to the 2013 Watauga County Relay for Life Summary release.
