Tenth Annual Kidfest at Grandfather Mountain features Hikes, Storytelling, Face Painting, Crafts and More

Aug. 14, 2013. On Saturday, Sept. 7, families and children of all ages will have a fun-filled opportunity to enjoy the nature and culture of the North Carolina Mountains during the tenth annual Kidfest at Grandfather Mountain.

Kidfest kicks off at 9 a.m. and the day is jam-packed with a schedule of entertaining activities such as guided hikes, storytellers, face painting, crafts and games.

DSC_4952New to the schedule this year is the Animal Olympics. This friendly competition will take place at 10:30 a.m. under the “Let it Rain” Picnic Shelter and offers participants a chance to test their senses and natural abilities. After completing these challenges you can see where you stack up next to some of the fastest and strongest animals in the world.

Also new to Kidfest this year is Fairy Houses at 9 a.m. at the Woods Walk. Led by Grandfather’s naturalists, guests can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and read stories about Fairy Houses before collecting bits of nature to construct fairy houses of their own.

Aside from various nature programs throughout the day, guests can look forward to animal appearances and live performances from some familiar local faces. Mark Freed and Trevor McKenzie will offer traditional old-timey music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Butterfly Garden and guests interested in authentic Appalachian tales can hear locally renowned storyteller Glenn Bolick tell stories in the Nature Museum Auditorium from 1-3 p.m.

Kidfest is included in the regular price of admission to Grandfather Mountain. No reservations are required. For a comprehensive schedule of events, visit www.grandfather.com.
