With Temps Dropping to Teens, Ski Resorts To Begin Opening on Friday Through Sunday

By Jesse Wood

Over the next few days, skiing/snowboarding/tubing activities will be available at local winter resorts as chilly temperatures are in store for the High Country. Sugar Mountain Resort will be the first to re-open on Friday.

Local ski resorts are opening slopes one after the other beginning on Friday with snowmaking taking place right now. Note that ice skating remains open at the resorts.

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort is re-opening on Friday, Dec. 9.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, Appalachian Ski Mtn. will open.

“Expect a majority of slopes to be open Saturday with great coverage and excellent snow conditions. Although temperatures would allow snowmaking during the daytime Saturday, Appalachian will not be making snow on open slopes for the comfort of all our guests!” a recent post from App Ski Mtn. reads.

Hawksnest Tubing also should open on Saturday.

“We will starting making snow as soon as the weather allows.  It does not seem like we will be able to open on Friday for snowtubing, but we should be ok for Saturday.  Watch our webcam to watch our progress,” according to the latest update from Hawksnest.

Then on Sunday, Beech Mountain Resort will open.

“The resort will operate from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and all facilities will be open.  Our snowmaking team is hard at work and will continue to make snow as temperatures allow.  Our goal is to re-open with a quality product,” Beech Mountain Resort stated in a recent release.

While Thursday, Friday and Saturday will feature low temperatures in the teens, the weather warms up on Sunday and more so on Monday, with highs in Boone forecasted at about 50 degrees, according to RaysWeather.com.

Hopefully, the ski resorts can solidify a decent base to hold out on Tuesday, which will be a little bit warmer than Monday, before the chillier temperatures return on Wednesday. Have fun on the slopes!
