Feb. 8, 2013. The forecasts called for a light snow yesterday, which was anything but light in some parts of the High Country. For example, Sugar Mountain has received five inches of snow in the past 24 hours, according to its website; Beech Mountain Resort mentions two inches of “new snow,” while Appalachian Ski Mountain is reporting one inch of natural snow.

Avery and Watauga County Schools are operating on a two-hour delay due to the “surprise snow,” as some have called it this morning.

As for what’s in the forecast tonight, the National Weather Service has issued a high-wind advisory that’s in effect from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. tonight. Expect very strong, gust northwest winds.

While New England is expected to experience an “impressive winter storm” of blizzard proportions, the areas along the North Carolina/Tennessee border will see a “few snow showers and flurries” developing this afternoon and lasting into the early evening.
