March 4, 2013. Cove Creek Elementary School Principal Toby Cone had a surprise visit from Watauga County Schools Supt. David Kafitz and others on Monday afternoon.

Cone was selected as WCS Principal of the Year for the 2013-14 year.

Cone is in his third year at the helm of Cove Creek. Before taking the position at Cove Creek, Cone was the assistant principal at Parkway Elementary School and assistant principal at Elkin Elementary School in Elkin.

Cone thanked the staff at Cove Creek and the rest of Watauga County Schools.

“I certainly couldn’t do it without them,” Cone said. “It’s an honor and privilege to be here in Watauga County.”

Stephen Martin, director of human resources for WCS, said that although he had only worked with Cone for one year, “he always makes decisions by putting the students first.”

School Board Member Barbara Kinsey offered congratulations, and former Cove Creek Principal Tom Trexler, who spent 32 years in the WCS system, noted that former Supt. Marty Hemric “picked the right person to follow me.”
