May 5, 2014. As of July 1, 2014, David C. Burleson will serve as the Avery County Schools Superintendent for another four-year term. The Avery County Board of Education unanimously approved his appointment.
“As a school board and community we know that the success of any school district depends on leadership. Our schools have thrived under the leadership of David Burleson and we are very fortunate and blessed to have him. Our schools and community have witnessed first hand a superintendent that genuinely cares about each student and employee of Avery County Schools,” according to a press release.
Under Mr. Burleson’s leadership the graduation rate has risen for the past two years placing Avery County Schools in the state’s top ten percent. Over the past five years the ACS Blue Ridge Academy has increased graduation ceremonies from one to two per year. The one-to-one technology initiative is currently in its fourth year, marking Avery County Schools as one of the only districts in the state to provide all student and staff with access to their own individual computer device during the school day. Mr. Burleson created four advisory boards where students, staff and community work together to offer input and accountability vital for our schools. School safety has been paramount during his leadership. Through proactive and on-going training and evaluations, each school is currently held to the highest standards to ensure that each school environment is as safe as it can be for our community. His most recent accomplishment has been creating the Pre-Kindergarten state endorsed mobile classroom, “SCOTTIE,” which is now visiting nine sites around the county serving children three and four years old who are not enrolled in a Pre-K program.
While Mr. Burleson has led the charge for these and many other incentives, he is quick to say, “I am only one of the many people who work to make sure that each child receives the very best education possible. We have a school board and county commission that put students first and seek to ensure that each one will live their dream upon graduation. I am reaching the end of my thirty-second year in education and have never worked with a school board so passionate about doing what is right for each child. I have said it before and will say it again; we have the best students, parents and staff in the country. It is a sincere honor and privilege to work with each one.”
Martha Davis, ACS Public Information Officer, stated, “I have the unique opportunity to work with and support Mr. Burleson in a variety of ways. My position enables me to see him in action in the most formal or the most informal atmosphere. Whether he is working with a small child or a congressman, he treats all people with the utmost respect and kindness. His day begins early and ends late because he does not want to miss anything that involves helping others and making a difference in their lives. He is a faithful man of God with a heart full of love and compassion. “
