July 3, 2014. The 13th annual Martin and Doris Rosen Summer Symposium on Remembering the Holocaust will be held July 12-18 at Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union. The event is named for symposium benefactors Doris Rosen and the late Martin Rosen.
Key speakers include world-renowned scholars, Appalachian faculty and a Holocaust survivor.
A Klezmer concert will be held Saturday, July 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Parkway Ballroom. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The free symposium provides public and private school teachers, university faculty, students and community members information and insights about victims, perpetrators and consequences of the Nazi Holocaust.
Teachers can receive continuing education units for attending the lectures, workshops, discussions, films and demonstrations.
Speakers scheduled to participate are:
- Mr. Michael Berenbaum, founding director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, author, film consultant and professor of religion at the University of Judaism.
- Dr. Harry Reicher, professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania.
- Dr. Zav Harel, Holocaust Survivor.
- Dr. John Cox, associate professor at University of North Carolina at Charlotte whose research focuses on the Holocaust, modern genocide and resistance.
- Kathy Kacer, author of children’s books about real people living through the Holocaust.
- Lee Holder, chair of the social studies department at North Lenoir High School
- Dr. Simon P. Sibelman, director of the center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies and the Leon Levine Distinguished Professor and a professor of French at Appalachian.
- Dr. Rennie Brantz, professor of history at Appalachian.
- Dr. Rosemary Horowitz, professor of English at Appalachian.
The symposium is sponsored by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the Community Advisory Board and Friends of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies. Appalachian’s College of Arts and Sciences and the University Bookstore, the Boone Jewish Community/Temple of the High Country, Havurah of the High Country, the Margolis Family, Stan Etkin Memorial Fund and the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust.
