Aug. 5, 2013. As SugarBrew wound to a close this weekend, many breweries came out victorious in the event’s Best in Show beer contest. Twelve judges decided the fates of more than 20 different brews, and here’s how the winners stacked up:

SugarBrew’s Best in Show Standings:

  • First Place: Thomas Creek’s Up the Creek Extreme IPA
  • Second Place: Flat Top Brewing’s IPA
  • Third Place: Brooklyn Brewing’s Brooklyn Lager

The category victors this year are:

  • Ales & Pilsners: Flat Top Brewing’s IPA
  • Porters: Triangle Brewing Company’s Best of Both Worlds
  • High Gravity: Thomas Creek’s Up the Creek Extreme IPA
  • Lagers: Brooklyn Brewing’s Brooklyn Lager
  • Wheats: Goose Island’s 312

The winning beer of the Best in Show competition, Up the Creek will be featured in the Last Run Lounge at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort during the winter season.

This year’s SugarBrew was a huge event, with a massive turnout that more than doubled last year’s attendance. The beautiful weather only helped matters, with many guests turning out for a great afternoon in the warm mountain air.

“It was such a great event,” said Kim Jochl of Sugar Mountain Resort.

This year, there were many changes to SugarBrew. Other than the addition of the brand new Spirits category, the venue changed the logistics of the event, like ticket sales and vendor accommodations, to make this year’s unforgettable event even better, Jochl said.

The beer contest was different this year too, intentionally incorporating fewer judges than last year’s competition.

The date of next year’s event has already been set for Aug. 2, however registration for vendors will not begin until the spring. With such a great event this year, one can only expect it to get even better from here.

Did you miss out on this year’s event? No worries, we’ve got the photos to show you what you missed!
