The Tennessee Highway Patrol said a 31-year-old man from Sugar Grove died and a 20-year-old woman from Boone was injured after a vehicle crashed into the Watauga Lake on Saturday night, according to WJHL.com, the website for Channel 11 News in Johnson City, Tenn.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night, Gregory Keith Harmon, 31 of Sugar Grove, was driving southbound on Highway 167 in Johnson County near Lakeview Drive. He then ran a stop sign before going directly into Watauga Lake.
Harmon was unable to get out of the vehicle and died, while the passenger, 20-year-old Marena Ann Mikeal of Boone, escaped and was transported to Johnson City Medical Center for injuries.
While WJHL.com reported that drugs and alcohol were involved and the Tennessee Highway Patrol requested toxicology results, no criminal charges or citations were issued.
