The National Weather Service issued wind and wind-chill advisories on Thursday morning. The wind advisory ends on Thursday afternoon, while the wind-chill advisory expires on Friday morning.

This morning northwest winds blew 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind chills Thursday morning ranged from below-5 to above-5 degrees. Higher elevations experienced gustier winds.

Some of the colder areas of the High Country on Thursday morning: Snake Mountain experienced a low of 7.4 degrees and Beech Mountain 6.3 degrees.

More of the same is expected through tonight.

“Dangerously cold wind chill today and tonight,” the wind-chill advisory reads. “A large area of high pressure will build in behind an arctic front today and allow very cold air to surge into the region. The combination of high pressure and advancing cold air will result in strong gusty wind today, especially at the higher elevations. This will create very low wind chill values through tonight.”

Wind chill projections are between 5-below and 10-below zero.

RaysWeather.com noted: “Blustery winds drive wind chills to near 0° for most but into the negative teens on mountaintops.”
