Five degrees below zero at about 6 a.m., Grandfather Mountain experienced the coldest temperatures in the High Country on Tuesday morning.

Taking into account the wind gusts of 60 miles per hour this morning, the coldest wind chill atop Grandfather Mountain was negative 37 degrees.

While Grandfather Mountain was the coldest area recorded by RaysWeather.com and at the meteorological research stations managed by AppalAIR at App State, folks everywhere in the High Country woke up to the coldest temps of the winter so far.

Check out how cold it was during the coldest point in the morning in your neck of the woods:

  • Boone: 5.7 degrees
  • Blowing Rock 3.4 degrees
  • Foscoe: 6.1 degrees
  • Snake Mountain: -3.1 degrees
  • Valle Crucis: 7.2 degrees
  • Deep Gap: 6.1 degrees
  • Seven Devils: 3.4 degrees
  • Banner Elk: 2.4 degrees
  • Beech Mountain: -4.6 degrees
  • Linville: 1.7 degrees
  • Sugar Mountain (top): -3.8 degrees
  • Newland: 2.8 degrees
  • Grandfather Mountain: -5.4 degrees

Now that we’ve experienced the coldest weather event so far, later this week the High Country and beyond will experience the biggest snow event of the winter.

While that isn’t necessarily saying much because we’ve only had a few inches of snowfall in the past few months, early snow projections are saying that we could see double-digit snowfall. It’s still too early, however, for accurate forecasts of the event expected later this week.
