Submission Deadline for Boone BANFF Banner Design Competition Set for Friday, Dec. 4

Outdoor Programs, a unit of University Recreation within the Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University, has been hosting the Banff Film Festival World Tour for 20 years.

To celebrate our 20th Anniversary, we are creating Banff banners that will be displayed in the Town of Boone during the month of March, which is when the Banff Film Festival World Tour comes to Boone every year.

The Banff Film Festival World Tour has become a focal point every year when our community comes together to celebrate mountain culture. The festival attracts people from all across our region and community who have some kind of connection with the mountain themes associated with the festival.

Our goal in hosting the Boone Banff Banner Competition is to encourage people to capture the spirit of the festival here in Boone and represent it in a graphical way. The banner design that is chosen will be the visual representation of the Banff Film Festival World Tour in the Boone community for years to come.

Submission Deadline is Friday Dec. 4 at 5:00pm.

Please go to this form to submit your Banff Design.

You can find current Banff Film Festival logos here, that you can incorporate into your design.

Banner Design should follow these guidelines:

  • The final banner size will be 30 inches wide by 64 inches tall.
  • The call to action and logo should be clear and easy to read. Clean and simple are important factors to consider with the design.
  • The call to action is really what you want to share, in a graphical way, with your design concept. We want the Banff logo to be incorporated into the design, but other than that, we want to keep words to a minimum. We would rather have the artists represent our mountain community and it’s relationship with the Banff Film Festival in some kind of meaningful, visual way. We want to celebrate the Banff Film Festival, and the themes from the festival, and would love to do so in a way that honors or acknowledges our own unique mountain culture here the the High Country.
  • There will be a hem of 3 and one quarter inches at the top of the banner and a hem of 3 and one quarter inches at the bottom of the banner. Therefore, for design purposes, using the same color at the top of the banner to bleed or fold into the top 3 and one quarter inches will make for a more subtle hem at the top of the banner. The same is true for the bottom of the banner. Using the same color at the bottom of the banner to bleed or fold into the bottom 3 quarter inches will make for a more subtle hem at the bottom of the banner.
  • The design should be uploaded on this website, in a PDF form, at 300 DPI or greater resolution.
  • The banner will be displayed so that both sides will be visible. The sides can be identical or completely different.
  • The banner needs to incorporate in some way the logo of the Banff Film Festival World Tour (The Banff logos can be found and downloaded from this site.)
  • The banner should not date itself. i.e., we would like to continue to use the banner in years to come.
  • The banner should evoke in some way the spirit of the Banff Film Festival, celebrating mountain adventure, culture and environment.
  • The banner should evoke in a visual way how the Boone and High Country Community and Appalachian community embraces the themes of the Banff Film Festival and to celebrate our own unique mountain community here in Boone and the surrounding High Country. We are looking for a banner design that celebrates the Banff Film Festival in a way that also embraces and highlights our own unique mountain community found here in Boone.
  • The banner design can be created with any media (computer, ink, watercolor, pencil, color, black and white, etc.), but the final product will need to be uploaded via PDF.
  • The banners will be displayed on the street/lamp posts in and around the Town of Boone during the month of March.
  • The Banff Centre, The Town of Boone, and Appalachian State University will need to approve the final design.

The Winning designer of the Boone BANFF Banner Competition will receive the following:

Their work will be displayed prominently in the Town of Boone for years to come.

The artist will receive public recognition at the Banff Film Festival 20th Annual Screening in March 2016.
