Students at Watauga County Public Schools Back in Class Today; Appalachian, Lees-McRae Not Until Next Week

By Paul T. Choate

SchoolBusJan. 7, 2013. The holidays have passed and students in the Watauga County Schools system returned to class this morning for the first time since Dec. 20. Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute students, out since Dec. 18, also returned this morning.

Students at Appalachian State University still have a little bit of their winter break to enjoy. The final day of exams was Dec. 14, after which the students got basically a month-long break to enjoy. They will resume classes next Monday, Jan. 14.

If ASU student’s month-long break seems like a awfully long time to be out of school, then Lees-McRae College’s almost six-week long break may seem like an eternity. The final day of fall exams at LMC was Thursday, Dec. 6, and students do not return to class until next Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Students at Two Rivers Community School, a tuition-free public charter school in Boone, will return to class tomorrow, Jan. 8, after being out since Dec. 21.

Students in the Avery County Schools system saw the shortest holiday break among the local schools. Their break began the same day as WCS, Dec. 20, but kids were back in class last Thursday, Jan. 3.
