Students at Two Rivers Community School Learn Through Giving This Holiday Season

Two Rivers Community School held its annual Holiday Store fundraiser on Dec. 4 to support families in need within our community. Simultaneously, the school’s annual food drive was nearing an end. Two Rivers’ teachers utilize these efforts as service learning projects engaging students in the different learning opportunities within each project.

The Holiday Store is an event for students to purchase donated items from local families, businesses, and supporters. It is similar to a school yard sale, but is exclusive to students. Students get the opportunity to shop for low-cost holiday gifts for their families and friends. The school’s fourth grade class manages the collection of items, prices the items, volunteers at the store, and handles the money as items are purchased. It’s a great opportunity for students to practice leadership, work together, and gain some exposure to financial literacy.

This year the store raised over $700 creating some excitement last Friday.

“This is the largest sum of money we’ve ever raised at the Holiday Store,” said Guidance Counselor Rachel Wood. “We plan to use the funds to purchase items for our families in need over the holiday season.”

In conjunction to the Holiday Store, the kindergarten class facilitated the school’s food drive. Late in October a Hospitality House representative visited the kindergarten class charging them with a mission to fill a shopping cart with canned foods and other items needed during the holiday season.

Throughout November and December the kindergarten challenged every grade level to bring in items to fill the cart. Today, cans, cereal boxes, and other items of need overflow the edges of the shopping cart into the school’s main office. Later this week the shopping cart will be donated to the Hospitality House. Before then, the kindergarten class will count and organize the items tying the experience to academics.
