Student Organizations at Appalachian State University Celebrate Black History Month in February

Jan. 27, 2014. In celebration of Black History Month, student organizations at Appalachian State University will host programs that challenge thoughts on racism as well as uplift the black community. The public is invited to all events, which run from Feb. 3-26. 

The celebration includes Black Cinema Sundays at 7 p.m. in Greenbriar Theatre of the Plemmons Student Union. The featured film Feb. 3 is “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” “Higher Learning” will be shown Feb. 9 with “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” Feb. 16 and “The Great Debaters” Feb. 23. The films are presented by the Black Student Association.

A book club reading of “Beloved” by novelist Toni Morrison will be presented on Thursdays by the Order of the Black and Gold. Reading and discussion will be held at 6 p.m. The location on Feb. 6 and 13 will be Whitewater Cafe in Plemmons Student Union. On Feb. 20 and 27, the book club will meet in the student union’s Beacon Heights Room.

The Mr. Ivy Pageant presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will be held Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Parkway Ballroom.

The Hair Affair presented by Ladies Elite will be held Feb. 12 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Whitewater Cafe. 

Entropy dance troupe presents Hip Hop: More than Music & Dancing Feb. 15 at noon in Plemmons Student Union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom.

A Reverse Racism Panel Discussion will be presented by Minority Women’s Leadership Circle Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Price Lake Room of Plemmons Student Union. 

A screening of the film “My Masculinity Helps” followed by discussion will be held Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union’s Parkway Ballroom. This event is also part of the Multicultural Student Development Diversity Lecture Series. 

A Black History Wax Museum will be presented by the National Pan-Hellenic Council Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the student union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom.

The Black Student Association will host its annual Blood Drive Feb. 26 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the student union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom.

Contact tables in the Plemmons Student Union will be “Roses for the Youth” presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Feb. 3-13 from 11-2 p.m. and “Chocolates for Charity” presented by Ladies Elite Feb. 12-14 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
