Looking for a comfortable, cozy place to enjoy winter in the High Country that also offers plenty for the whole family to do? Turn to Blowing Rock’s Chetola Resort, where you can kick back, unwind and enjoy the winter months in so many ways.

With weekly specials, a variety of on-site activities, dining options and more, you’ll find everything you need for a fun and relaxing getaway right there on the resort grounds. Stay during the weekend of Blowing Rock’s WinterFest celebration, Jan. 28-31, and you’ll be right in the center of the excitement.
Amenities Galore
Settled on more than 80 beautiful acres in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this world-class resort boasts a rich history, high-end amenities and something for everyone.
During your stay, take advantage of on-site features like the heated indoor swimming pool, the full-service spa and the fitness center. If you’re looking for a good time, grab dinner and drinks at Headwaters Pub while you watch the game, or make your way to Timberlake’s Restaurant for a fine dining experience you won’t soon forget.
Bringing the kids? Don’t worry, there’s plenty for them to do, too.
“We also have our Kids’ Camp. Near the indoor swimming pool, there’s a ping pong table and they can play air hockey,” said Chetola Marketing Manager Allison West. “If you want to play outside in the cold, you can go sledding on the hill, build snowmen or have a snowball fight. If you want to watch it from afar, you can go swimming and play ping pong. There’s literally a lot of ground to cover when you’re enjoying time with your family.”
Its close proximity to one of the Southeast’s leading winter sports venues makes Chetola a great place to stay for a weekend of skiing and outdoor fun.
“We are literally just a few minutes away from Appalachian Ski Mountain,” West said. “It’s an easy drive there and an easy drive right back to the resort.”
Weekly Happenings
Whether you’re coming in from out of town or you’re a local looking for a weekend off, the resort also features weekly specials that guarantee you won’t even have to leave the grounds for dining and nightlife festivities.
“People are always looking for something to do, and they don’t have to go far. Everything is right here,” said West. “They get wonderful dinner, entertainment and a beautiful setting to enjoy all of that. It’s all right here at their fingertips.”
Timberlake’s offers Steak on the Lake for just $28 per person from 5-10 p.m. on Wednesday nights, and live music and oysters on Thursday nights.
Every Friday night at the restaurant from 6-9 p.m., enjoy the great standards live during jazz night with local favorites Maureen Renihan and Friends.
Bonfire Nights on Saturdays give the kids and the adults a chance to breathe in the cool mountain air, warm up by the fire, satisfy a sweet tooth and kick back for some good old fashioned fun.
“Bonfire nights are extremely family-friendly and they happen right out at the fire pit next to the lake. We have drink specials and $5 s’mores packages at the bonfire, and there’s live music going on in the restaurant, as well,” West said. “Kids are running around and having a good time and enjoying the s’mores. It’s geared for both adults and kids.”
WinterFest Events Jan. 28-31
The winter months are a great time to enjoy a stay at Chetola, even more so during WinterFest in Blowing Rock.
Not only is the resort located within walking distance of the downtown happenings that weekend, it will also play host to the annual Polar Plunge, the festival’s signature cold-weather event.
Many adventurous spirits will brave the cold that Saturday morning, sport their wildest costumes and take a dip in Chetola Lake. It’s all in good fun, but it’s also a fundraiser for two local charities: the Western Youth Network and the Hospitality House.
WBTV news anchor John Carter will be on hand to emcee the event, and large numbers of locals and out-of-towners will show up to watch the action.
“There’s so much activity and energy. The plungers are all in crazy costumes and it’s so much fun,” West said. “Especially in the last few years, we’ve had a lot more kids jumping in, and they’re so adorable. It is always fun to have activity on the grounds and see all of the people coming in from so many places.”
If you want to watch the plungers make the jump but you don’t want to fight the cold, stay warm inside and enjoy a special brunch at Timberlake’s that will feature a live streaming of video as the event happens.
“If you don’t want to stand outside in the elements, there’s a special brunch going on and you can watch the whole thing live from the comforts of the restaurant,” said West. “Watching the plunge is a perfect way to experience WinterFest.”
Also during WinterFest, the resort grounds will glow at night with the Festival of Lights on display.
