Spring Friends of the Library Used Book Sale Returned May 30

By Savannah R. Watts

Yesterday, the Watauga County Public Library kicked-off another Friends of the Library Used Book Sale from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the library. The Book Sale is open Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and welcomes everyone.

The Friends of the Watauga County Public Library was founded in 1974 in an effort to engage the community in using the library as well as provide funds for areas that do not receive funding from the government. The books sold at the book sale are donated to the library and Friends of the Library. This year, the abundance of donated books is so great that every day there will be new selections filling the tables as other books get bought.

“This is our biggest fundraiser for the library,” says Marcia Hoffman, volunteer and Friends of the Library member. “The library doesn’t receive enough funds from the state, so it depends on the support of the community and these book sales every year.” In addition to the Spring Book Sale, they also host a Holiday Book Sale annually.

The revenue made from the Book Sales and other donations to the Friends of the Library go towards books, audio/visual supports, programs, grants and more, and are generally used for short-term projects for areas without government funding. These donations are most often used within the next fiscal year.

Town Council member and retired education professor from Appalachian State University, Dr. Connie Ulmer says of the book sale, “It shows that reading is still important, that learning is still relevant and is still happening among children and adults. Seeing everyone buy books is great because we get to see what people love and have interest in learning about.”

Stop by the book sale this weekend at the Watauga County Public Library located at 140 Queen St., Boone, NC 28607. For more information from their website, visit http://www.arlibrary.org/.
