Adoption Special on Hounds at Avery Humane Society, Hounds Have Great Ability to Focus, Bond

June 6, 2013. June at the Avery County Humane Society is “Release the Hounds!” month.  All hounds and hound mixes are available at half off the original adoption fee.

“The hounds are favorites of staff and volunteers,” according to Charlene Calhoun, shelter manager, “because they are calm and peaceful, yet they love to walk and play in the dog park.”

Penelope10[1]Calhoun pointed out that the hounds are especially successful in the Leash for Life program, in which inmates work with the dogs for several weeks.  Hounds, which were originally bred for hunting, have great ability to focus and bond well with their inmate trainers.  Graduates of the Leash on Life program are house-trained, walk on a leash with manners, have some agility skills, and know basic obedience commands.  Todd and Ann—both hounds—and Jena—a Plott Hound, North Carolina’s state dog—have completed the program.  Presently in the Leash on Life program are Penelope and Sally.

You can check the website at www.averyhumane.org to see these hounds or others available at this special price.

“Cindy is a favorite of volunteers because she has transformed from a timid, reclusive dog to a loving pet, eager for attention,” said Calhoun.  Volunteers took Cindy, Todd, Sally, and Frankie to the Business Expo, where they greeted people and received much petting.  Other hounds eager for their forever homes are Nevada and Graeme.

All these wonderful dogs are current with vaccinations, micro-chipped, and either spayed or neutered.

Call 828-733-2333 or come by the humane society for more information so you can release one of these hounds to become a loving member of your family.
