Snow Forecasts Keep Growing Bigger: Six to 12 Inches Predicted Even Though It Feels Too Warm Right Now

By Jesse Wood

Jan. 17, 2012. The snow forecast keeps growing – from three to six inches to four to eight inches and now from five to nine inches to six to 12 inches, according to numerous weather outlets, and even more in the higher elevations.

But walking outside this morning, it’s hard to believe inches of snow are on the way – as the forecasters have predicted for the past few days, where a Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning.noaa_logo

In the latest National Weather Service announcement, colder air is situated west of the Blue Ridge Mountains until early afternoon, when the colder air shifts east and causes rain to turn into snow. This combined with a low-pressure system tracking across the southeast states to the North Carolina coast could cause rapid accumulation of heavy wet snow, according to the NWS.

The Winter Storm Warning from NWS is in effect from noon today until 1 a.m. on Friday morning. Rain is expected before 3 p.m. – and then snow and sleet. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s to lower 30s with wind gusts up to 35 mph.
