March 18, 2014. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University (ASU) presents Art Expo 2014, an annual juried exhibition and arts competition for Appalachian students. The exhibit will be on view from March 19-April 11 at the Smith Gallery located in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibition is organized by the Smith Gallery, juried by Cora Fisher, Curator of Contemporary Art at the southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston Salem, NC. Cameron Neal, a graphic design senior at ASU, designed the promotional materials for the event.
Works exhibited in Art Expo 2014 were selected from hundreds of entries made to the Smith Gallery via Slideroom.com. Guest juror Cora Fisher chose works of various media including clay, drawing, fibers, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video. Fisher will award 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes as well as determine the Best in Show. The public is invited to vote for their favorite piece at the Smith Gallery through the duration of the exhibition to determine the People’s Choice Award. The Belk Library and Information Commons and the Appalachian Permanent Collection at Plemmons Student Union will also announce their purchase awards.
A public reception for Art Expo 2014 is scheduled for April 4 from 4-6 p.m. at the Smith Gallery. Please join us to honor these 47 student artists, celebrate with the award winners, as well as the Department of Art Students receiving scholarships given for their achievements.
