Feb. 6, 2013. Silence ensues regarding the continued Watauga County Board of Education’s closed-session meeting to discuss personnel issues, a discussion that spanned some five to six hours through the the course of two separate nights.
Whatever was discussed last night, however, comes with some finality. Unlike the initial closed-session meeting on Jan. 30 that was continued until last night, the meeting last night was adjourned, according to those in the meeting.
“No action was taking,” said School Board Member Brenda Reese.
Reese has been fairly tight-lipped since the incident between a downtown Boone restaurateur and Supt. David Kafitz at the Mellow Mushroom on King Street escalated into public relations nightmare for the head of Watauga County Schools.
The initial closed session meeting wasn’t scheduled until a few days later on the same afternoon that another gaffe, if you will, was publicized involving a conversation with choice words directed at the director of the Watauga County Board of Elections on Election Day.
Reese’s quiet stance – at least publicly – hasn’t changed.
“I can’t say anything about what went on in closed session,” Reese said on Wednesday morning.
School Board Member Ron Henries also wouldn’t talk about closed session discussions.
Dr. Lee Warren added, “Only thing I am going to say, again as before, we are still dealing with the issue, but I can’t discuss it.”
The other two board members couldn’t be reached first thing Wednesday morning.
