Sheriffs From Around the State Headed to Chetola Resort for Fall NC Sheriffs’ Association Conference

By Paul T. Choate

Nov. 27, 2012. The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office will host the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association (NCSA) fall conference at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock from Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 28-30.

“I fully anticipate a great conference and want to thank the many local folks and businesses who have contributed to the anticipated enjoyment and success of this conference,” said Watauga Sheriff Len Hagaman.

Chetola has hosted the NCSA fall conference before and over 60 of the state’s 100 sheriffs attended the event. Hagaman said he felt more sheriffs attended that event than the last time it was held at the beach and said he expects a great turnout.

“It’s a good time for everybody to be up here,” Hagaman said. “We haven’t seen each other since the early summer so we’re more than tickled to have them up. It’s a good time to be up here, particularly after Thanksgiving and before Christmas.”

The three-day conference doubles as a training exercise with several training sessions on the agenda. Hagaman said the conference “runs the gambit” of important training seminars and said those who are presenting are “top notch.”

The conference is centered specifically on sheriffs and their command staff and features the following seminars:

  • Civil Liability: “What Sheriffs Are Being Sued About … How Sheriffs Can Avoid Lawsuits … How Sheriffs Can Win Lawsuits!” (Wednesday, 2:30 to 5 p.m.)
  • Sovereign Citizens: “What Sheriffs Need To Know To Protect Our Deputies and Our Citizens” (Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
  • Child Custody Orders: “What Can A Sheriff’s Deputy Do Legally?” (Thursday, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.)
  • Involuntary Commitment Orders: “A Sherriff’s Perspective On A Broken System” (part 1) (Thursday, 2:30 to 3 p.m.)
  • Involuntary Commitment Orders: “Sheriffs Who Have A Solution” (part 2) (Thursday, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.)
  • Changes for 2013 – Sheriff’s Standards Commission (Friday, 8:15 to 10:15 a.m.)
  • Project Lazarus: “What Sheriffs Can Do About Illegal Prescription Drug Abuse in Our Own Country” (Friday, 8:15 to 10:15 a.m.)

“We are indeed honored to host the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association again this year,” Hagaman said. “Chetola is just a fabulous place for them to have it. They bend over backwards and do whatever they can do to accommodate these folks. It’s really great.”

The event kicks off with registration from 12:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Opening ceremonies start at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
