The Blowing Rock Attraction is Hosting its Second Annual Shagging at the Rock on June 2

Wayne Euliss as Elvis

By Elly Murray

The Blowing Rock Attraction is hosting its second annual Shagging at the Rock on June 2. The entire day will be dedicated to the appreciation and enjoyment of shagging, a Carolina dance that is a derivative of the Jitterbug and the Charleston. Shagging at the Rock will have four bands playing, including Silk Groove, Eric and the Chill Tones, The Tams, and Wayne Euliss as Elvis.

The Blowing Rock Attraction is one of North Carolina’s oldest travel attractions, and it towers at 4,000 feet above sea level. The rocky walls of the gorge below it create a flume that forces air to travel up, which is why Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not Museum calls it, “The only place in the world where snow falls upside down.”

The first band featured at Shagging at the Rock, Silk Groove, features “a hodgepodge of singers that came from other beach bands” according to Charlie Sellers, the mayor of Blowing Rock and general manager of the Blowing Rock Attraction. They’re an up-and-coming band, and they perform mostly beach music.

Wayne Euliss will be performing as Elvis next, dressed up as the legendary King of Rock and Roll and singing the part too. He hasn’t been to the Shagging at the Rock yet, but according to Charlie Sellers, he attended the last two years’ September Music Festivals and was, “a good crowd pleaser, very active with the crowd.”

The third performance will be Eric and the Chill Tones. Eric is one of the anchors for Channel 2 WFMY News in Greensboro, and his band performs a mixture of beach, Motown and soul. They recently added a new female member, Dana Bett, who acts as one of the vocalists for the band.

The fourth and final performance will be the Tams, a band that features two of the original members from their popular time in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. They took their name from the Tam o’shanter hats they wore on stage, and primarily performed R&B, soul, and beach music. According to Charlie Sellers, “at times, they bring in their grandkids, who are children that sing really, really well.”

The Blowing Rock Elementary School will be selling soft drinks and water, and Moe’s Barbeque will also be selling food. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own coolers and lawn chairs, but umbrellas and pets are not permitted.

Gates open at 8:30 a.m., and the music begins at 1 p.m at The Blowing Rock on Highway 321 South. Tickets are up for sale on their website, and three VIP tents are available as well. Tickets purchased from April 2 to May 29 are $40, tickets purchased from May 30 to June 2 are $55, and tickets for children 12 and under are $10.
