On Aug. 11, 2017, the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office received information that a registered sex offender with the last known registered address of 196 Pounding Mill Road, Warrensville, NC, was possibly living at a location in Watauga County. Additional information received was that the registered sex offender had been at that Watauga County location for approximately one month.
An investigation into the registered sex offender and failure to register was started immediately by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office. Numerous interviews were conducted and it was discovered that James Clayton Dixon who was convicted on June 2, 2016 of sexual abuse of a child at Camp Lejuene in Fayetteville, NC, had been living at Vanderpool Campground located in the Vilas community of Watauga County since Saturday, July 22, 2017.
On August 11, 2017, as a result of the investigation James Clayton Dixon, 39, a resident of 120 Campground Road, Lot 22, Vilas, NC 28692, was charged with Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. He was arrested and taken before a Watauga County Magistrate where he was given a $25,000.00 secured bond and a court date of September 8, 2017.
