May 23, 2014. Get ready for some serious fun as Emergency Fest takes place Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Raley Parking Lot on the campus of Appalachian State University.
Sponsored by the Watauga County Firefighters Association, Emergency Fest will feature the presence of vehicles and personnel from all of the emergency-service organizations in the county.
Emergency Fest is geared to help children understand and become familiar with who would be assisting them during the course of an emergency.
Children will be allowed to play in the fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, while at the same time meet uniformed personnel.
This is the 11th year of Emergency Fest. It’s evolved over the years with the bomb squad from Wilkesboro, HAZMAT team out of Asheville and WINGS Air Rescue of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia joining the local emergency organizations at the annual event near downtown Boone.
This year, the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Bike and Pedestrian Safety Trailer will be on hand. SafeKids will also be present, too, to help kids correctly fit bicycle helmets and car seats.
Amy Flieg, a fire prevention specialist with the Boone Fire Department, said the festivals tagline is “serious fun,” while mentioning that a scavenger hunt will take place for the kids, too.
