April 25, 2013. Two weeks ago, the N.C. Department of Transportation announced Maymead Inc. of Mountain City, Tenn., was awarded a $2-million contract to apply asphalt surface treatments to 60.8 miles of secondary roads in Caldwell, Avery and Watauga counties.

32 sections of Watauga County roads stretching 27.5 miles are receiving the treatment, while 17 sections of Avery County roads stretching 15.5 miles will see improvements. (See which roads are being improved below.)

According to a prior release, the asphalt surface treatment is a “cost-effective pavement preservation technique on low-volume roads. The AST is constructed by spraying an asphalt mixture onto the pavement surface, then spreading chips of fine rock into the mixture. The chips are embedded into the surface by rubber-tired rollers, and the surface is then swept to remove excess chips. This treatment seals fine cracks in the underlying pavement surface, which reduces pavement deterioration by preventing water from intruding into the base and subgrade of the road. This improves wet weather traction, as well as safety.”

Check below to see if roads in your neck of the woods are on the list. Work can begin as early as April 29 and is to be completed by Oct. 1.
