The Ashe County Little Theatre presents their first production of 2016 Lost in Yonkers, April 8, 9, 10 at the Ashe Civic Center. Tickets are now on sale at the Ashe Arts Center or by calling 336-846-2787. Tickets are $16 adults and $5 students.
Lost In Yonkers is a “dram-edy” by Neil Simon. A period piece set in 1942 Yonkers, New York, this play, considered one of Simons’ most sensitive and thought provoking, takes a serious yet light-hearted look at the relationships of a first generation American family with Jewish immigrant heritage. The play is directed by Jim Williams and produced by Rebecca Williams.
The story centers around one the family’s sons, the recently widowed Eddie and his two teenaged sons Jay and Arty. Eddie owes a loan shark a lot of money and must take a job selling scrap metal throughout the south. But the snag is Eddie’s sons cannot travel with him so he must try to convince his mother to take care of the boys for a year in her home. “Grandma” rules her home with an iron hand and insists everyone in her house follows her rules and maintains order. The rest of Grandma’s family, her children Bella, Louie and Gert, show the boys quirky behavior all related to their domineering upbringing by their mother.
The play finishes as Eddie returns and the boys gain a new perspective of their Grandma as they say their goodbyes. Bella finds the courage to challenge her mother and realizes her newfound independence. Their relationship changes and Grandma finally accepts change to the status quo.
The Ashe County Little Theatre cast includes Baron Cooper as Eddie, Levi Blevins as Arty, Rowan Renfroe as Jay, Sharon Kasel as Grandma, Abby Suggs as Bella, Ike Smith as Louie and Bobbi Jo Scott as Gert.
