Search Warrant Obtained by SBI for Deputy Mast Shooting Released: Short Description of Shooting, Items

Aug. 3, 2012. The Watauga Clerk of Court released the search warrant for 2130 Hardin Road near Deep Gap obtained by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation from Superior Court Judge Phil Ginn in the hours following the shooting of Deputy William Mast Jr on July 26. 

The warrant describes items obtained through search, including the shotgun used to kill Mast, a description of the residence of Mitchell Allen Trivette, the man who shot Mast and a short description of the shooting.

As written on warrant, items obtained include:

  • Glock Model 22 40 S&W caliber SN RY0537
  • Uniform pants with duty belt, boots and mobile radio
  • 3 spent 40 S&W cartridge cases
  • Bullet fragments
  • 3 Winchester shotgun shells 
  • Springfield Arms 12 Gauge Shotgun
  • Toy brown and silver rifle
  • DNA swab
  • Buck fixed blade knife
  • Remington knife sheath

The description of the shooting is as follows:

“At approximately 12:50 a.m. on July 26, 2012, Deputies William Mast and Preston Russell responded to an open line 911 call at 2130 Hardin Road Boone NC, 28607. When officers arrived the suspect came to the door armed with a shotgun. Shortly thereafter suspect and officers fired.”

The description of place to be searched:

“The residence is a beige single wide trailer with orange trim. There are wooden steps leading to the front door. The numbers “2130” are displayed on the trailer near the front door … The following vehicles located at residence – Red Dodge Truck, Blue Ford Ranger Truck and Blue Ford Truck.”

Agent obtaining warrant:

“Special Agent S.D. Greene with N.C. State Bureau of Investigation has been law enforcement officer in North Carolina for 10 years … and has conducted forensic examinations in hundreds of homicide investigations and has testified in court as to his findings over 80 times.”
