Search Begins For New Valle Crucis Principal

June 23, 2014. Valle Crucis Principal Martha Clark has announced that she will resign her position as principal effective July 31 to move to the New England area for family reasons.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff, students, parents, and community in Watauga County,” said Clark.  “The Watauga County Schools system is a special place and I am proud to have been a part of such a wonderful school district.  However, I have a daughter in New England that needs my support and that is where I must focus my attention at this time.”

Interim Superintendent Dr. David Fonseca thanked Clark for her leadership at Valle Crucis and wished her well on her move.  “We are very grateful for the service Mrs. Clark has given to the Watauga County Schools,” said Fonseca.  “While it is always difficult to part company with a member of the team, we completely understand and respect her desire to offer more support to her family.  We sincerely hope that this will be a rewarding move for her and we wish her all the best in this next chapter of her life.”

Clark has been principal of Valle Crucis for the last three years and was an assistant principal at Watauga High School for one year prior to taking the helm at Valle Crucis.  She came to the Watauga County Schools after having served as principal of Lake Forest East Elementary School in Frederica, Delaware for five years.   Earlier in her career, Clark served in North Carolina school systems for four years as an assistant principal and five years as a teacher.

Director of Human Resources Dr. Stephen Martin said that the district will move swiftly to recruit and select a new principal for Valle Crucis.  “We will work closely with our personnel and school parents at Valle Crucis to identify the type of leader that will best serve our students there,” said Martin. “I have been able to discuss the hiring process briefly with incoming Superintendent Dr. Scott Elliott and can also say that it will be our goal to have a new principal on board in early August, at least two weeks before the start of the next school year.”

The position is already being advertised and the top candidates will be selected for interviews during July.

Valle Crucis Elementary has a current enrollment of 357 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.  It is one of eight combined elementary/middle schools in the Watauga County Schools system.
