Renown Christian vocalist Scot Cameron will direct a large community choir and lead congregational singing in the upcoming High Country Hymn Sing at Mount Vernon Baptist Church on Oct. 14

By Sherrie Norris

Scot Cameron is a name easily recognized today in Christian music circles across the country, and in particular, in the High Country. The former Boone resident and Appalachian State University graduate served with Mount Vernon Baptist Church for a number of years before expanding his horizons as a well-respected and highly sought vocalist.

Cameron will be returning to Boone, and yes, to his home church, to lead in what organizers are expecting to be a memorable event during the High Country Hymn Sing on Sunday, October 14 at 6 p.m.

Cameron will direct a large community choir, comprised mainly of those from area churches, as well as lead in congregational hymns and gospel songs, hopefully with a few solo performances thrown into the mix.

“It’s always great to return home to family, friends, the beauty of the mountains and the familiar sounds of my childhood,” said Cameron. “Growing up, I heard the message of Christ sung every week in church as we enjoyed a tradition of meaningful hymns and gospel songs. Those songs will never leave me, especially in times of great need and great celebration. I’ll pass this heritage of great hymn singing on to my son — songs of love, hope, joy and salvation.

More About Scot Cameron

Over the past 15 years, Cameron has earned a national reputation for excellence in Christian and classical music. Raised in the mountains of North Carolina, Scot was influenced by the Southern gospel music he heard as a child in his hometown of Boone. He quickly embraced a wide variety of styles including classical, contemporary, traditional and inspirational, utilizing this diversity as a singer, conductor, vocal coach, clinician, music evangelist and worship leader.

At App State, Cameron helped organize and direct collegiate choirs, while studying for his bachelor of arts degree in vocal performance and sacred music. He later moved to Fort Worth where he earned his master of music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Cameron entered full-time concert ministry in 1995 and has also managed to stay closely connected to the local church.

Cameron has traveled the United States and beyond, singing with orchestras and chorales, as well as being featured in sacred performances at churches, workshops and denominational conferences; he has been a guest on numerous television programs, including Swan’s Place and the Dino Show.  He has ministered with Chuck Swindoll Ministries, Market Place Ministries, Focus on the Family, MEF Bible Conference, Christian Medical/Dental Society and the Texas Evangelism Conference.

Cameron has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony, Dallas Bach Society, Spectrum Chamber Society, Orpheus Chamber Chorale, Austin Civic Chorus, Texas Camerata and the Orchestra of New Spain. Nationally, he has served as soloist for Concert Royal at Princeton University, New York Early Music, Rochester Bach Festival, the Bach Sinfonia of Washington D.C., and the Sacramento Choral Society at Carnegie Hall. Internationally, Cameron has performed in Israel, Latvia, Spain, France, England, China, Brazil, Austria, The Czech Republic, Taiwan and Singapore.

In addition to his five solo recordings, Cameron is a featured soloist on Michael Cox’s Deo Gratias CD with the Fort Worth Symphony, Handel’s Alexander’s Feast with the Bach Sinfonia of Washington D.C., Madrid 1752 with Madrid Barocco, and a live performance recording of Spanish Baroque music sung in the National Auditorium in Spain.

“His amazing voice, passion for Jesus, heart for worship, and love for God’s people have made him one of the finest worship leaders our church has ever known.” Said Dr. Jim Denison, former pastor at Park Cities Baptist, Dallas.

Dr. Ken Hemphill, former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, had this to say, as well: “Seldom have I listened to any vocalist who has touched me so deeply as Scot Cameron. God has blessed him with a winsome spirit and a beautiful voice. When he sings of Christ, it is like an artist who paints a picture in your mind.”

And, in a review, The Washington Post printed: “Mr. Cameron captured the emotional radiance and buoyant energy with astounding expertise.”

Cameron and his wife Amanda have one son, Ian Alexander, 8. For more information on Scot and Amanda’s ministry, please visit www.cameronministries.com.
