By Jesse Wood

Public schools in Avery and Watauga counties are operating on a delay on Wednesday due to road conditions. See releases from both school systems below:

Watauga County Schools

Schools will open with a two hour delay and buses will run Limited Routes A on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Schools will be open on an early release schedule on Saturday, Jan. 30.  Students in the K-8 schools will be dismissed at 12:00 and the high school will let out at 1:00 on Saturday.  Lunch will be served and buses will run their usual routes.  The afterschool program will not be open.

Avery County Schools

At this time, due to areas of black ice forming on roads in our county the Avery County Schools will be operating on a three-hour delay for students on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Faculty and staff will report on a two-hour delay.

We will continue to monitor roads this morning to make sure roads are safe for travel.  Our buses will not run any gravel roads or the following paved roads: Gilliam Road, Russ Norris, Martins Branch, Whitaker Branch and Birchflied Creek.

Have a wonderful day and thank you for caring about the safety of our students.
