Jan. 15, 2014. Just before the National Weather Service winter weather advisory went into effect at noon on Wednesday, Avery County Schools and Watauga County Schools dismissed students at about 10 a.m. to avoid buses traveling on slick roads. The school systems will monitor the roads through the evening to make a decision on class tomorrow.

A “clipper system” moving through the Great Lakes will bring an accumulation of up to three inches as the advisory is in effect until midnight, according to the NWS Blacksburg, Va., office and RaysWeather.com.

RaysWeather.com forecasts a low of 16 degrees on Wednesday and 23 degrees on Thursday with winds in the 10 to 20 mph range.

The cold air clamps down and only gets colder going into the weekend. Thursday is a “tweener” with full sunshine and seasonably chilly conditions,” RaysWeather.com reports in its forecast discussion, adding that a the scenario will repeat Friday and Saturday as another Great Lakes clipper is expected to occur.
