March 3, 2014. With inclement weather developing in some parts of Avery and Watauga counties, both school systems have announced early dismissals Monday.

Avery County Schools closed at 1 p.m., while Newland dismissed at 12:45 p.m. The school noted that it will continue to monitor road conditions in order to make a decision on school tomorrow at 7 p.m. tonight.

Kindergarten through eighth grade in Watauga County Schools dismissed at 1:30 p.m., while Watauga High School will dismiss at 2:15 p.m.

While the Blacksburg, Va., office of the National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for counties all around the High Country, no such statements have been issued for Avery and Watauga counties.

RaysWeather.com noted in its forecast discussion that: “Rain will change to sleet and snow (especially from Avery County north) and a few pockets of freezing rain or freezing drizzle can’t be ruled out. Most of the region will get only a dusting, but higher elevations along with Ashe and Alleghany Counties could get up to 1 inch. Tonight will be very cold with evening snow flurries. Tuesday and Wednesday will be dry and cool for early March.”
