By Rebecca Mullins

Oct. 10, 2013. Friday and Saturday Oct. 11-12, the Rocky Knob Bike Park hosts the third annual Fall Festival.

On Friday, Oct. 11, the festivities begin at 5 p.m. for the park’s Pump Track Celebration. A DJ will beat out the latest tracks while people of all ages take to the newly opened pump track. Around 6:30 p.m. some informal events will take place to see who can do the best tricks or fastest laps.

The pump track is the latest edition to the bike park which was just opened to the public at the beginning of September.

“The pump track is a place people can get together and actually learn from each other,” said Kristian Jackson, Trail Boss of Rocky Knob Park.

“It allows for a lot of individual creativity and self-expression because you’re constantly moving the bike around and working on becoming faster and smoother or learning tricks.”

In addition to the events and music, Bald Guy Brew Coffee will be handing out a specially-brewed blend for the festival. A few miscellaneous snacks will also be available during the evening.

Jackson remarked that Friday night’s activities will probably wrap up around 8 p.m. Following the celebration, guests are encouraged to stop by Appalachian Mountain Brewery for Port-O-Pie Pizza. A portion of these sales will go to the Rocky Knob Park and Appalachian State University’s recreation management scholarship.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” begins at 9 a.m. The ASU Cycling Team will be there to help kids with some individual skill development techniques. Jackson recognized that children of any age were welcome, but recommended that they be independent on two wheels, so no tricycles or training wheels.

Santa Cruz Bikes will have a few bikes on hand for a demo tour. All participants are welcome try out one of their select bikes, but don’t count on having one to ride the whole time. Bring your own bike or rent one from Magic Cycles or Boone Bikes to ensure that you have a bike to ride.

At noon on Saturday, the park will host a barbeque for $7 a plate with a raffle ticket included. The raffle begins just one hour later and includes a Double Down rack from Yakima, Bell’s (fantastic) Super helmet, goods from Tsuga, special Bald Guy Brew Rocky Knob Roast, Mountain Khakis and merchandise from Vans and Spy.

Saturday’s events end at 1 p.m., so make sure you get there early to get in the maximum amount of time riding the park.
